(gnus-init-file, which defaults to
~/.gnus.el)
(gnus-group-read-init-file).

Save the .newsrc.eld file (and .newsrc if wanted)
(gnus-group-save-newsrc). If given a prefix, force
saving the file(s) whether Gnus thinks it is necessary or not.
